The Raw Numbers
Here are the numbers you need to know about the changes
- The existing path length is 2.3km. The new path will be 690m.
- The existing path length is 4% of the total coastal path from Golden Beach to the Maroochy River. The changes mean this will fall to 2%. Thus 98% of the available path will be available to people to walk away from off-leash dogs.
- The existing area for off-leash exercise is approximately 0.15 square kilometres, and much of this is forest. This will fall to 0.04 square kilometres, of which the majority is forest and scrub, unsuitable for walking.
- The existing times available for off-leash walking is an average 4 hours out of an average of 12 hours of daylight. This means that 100% of the coastal path is available for people to use with no off-leash dogs, for 70% of daylight hours. If anything, the balance is wrong
- Estimates vary, but it is thought that 36% of all Australian households own a dog. Figures are not known for the Sunshine Coast, although the council would have a very good estimate from dog registration data.
